Motivating students to read

In order to celebrate Saint Valentine's day at our school we read the following poem by Robert Burns:

O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That’s sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry:

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.

Lsten to the song

Students tried to memorize the poem. My intention is encouraging them to become teachers and explain the poem to other students at our high school. If it works, we will learn some other poems by heart. This idea helps us to work on literature keeping in mind the European Portfolio. As a bilingual school it also means a way of working as a team in collaboration with the Spanish Department, whose main project is : Fomento a la lectura.
